D Vs F color diamond? Four compelling reasons to choose F color instead of D color diamond.

  • Near impossible to spot the differences in naked eyes
  • Huge price differences between D and F color grade
  • As per GIA’s Color grading chart- Both D and F are top-notch quality
  • Both D and F when mounted on metals like Platinum, Silver, Rose, White or Yellow Gold, it becomes impossible to even for an expert grader to judge which one is D and which one is F.
  • One more super tip that will surpass your expectation in choosing the right color diamond (suggested in the end)

Let’s understand this one by one. Before that first look at the Diamond’s Color Grading Chart and see where D and F color sit as per the quality is concerned.

As I am focusing on D and F color only, I am not going to discuss other color grades here. You can read my “Color Chapter” where I have illustrated each color grade in detail with real images.  Read the chapter to get a clear idea about all the color grades. Come to the point now.

As per GIA (Gemological Institute of America) diamond’s color grade (in white category) starts with D and ends with Z. D being the best and Z being the lowest in quality.

Have a look at the chart below to understand it better.

Name of the Color

Quality

Appearance

D

Rare (Best)

Absolute white, Colorless like pure water

E

Excellent

Colorless super white

F

Excellent

Ice White

G

Very Good

White

H

Very Good

Presence of Very very slight hue of yellow

I & J

Good

Presence of Very slight hue of yellow

K to Z

From K onwards the presence of yellowish tint is increasingly visible in naked eyes

Things to remember: The difference between one color grade up or down is microscopic and cannot be noticed without the help of special grading tool under a controlled environment.

Now come to the five points.

  1. Near impossible to spot the differences in naked eyes

To prove my point, I am giving you a small task. Just look at the images of real diamonds below.

D vs F color Diamond

I hope you have given a good look at all the diamonds. Now tell me did you find any differences of color among them. Of the four diamonds two are of D color and the other two are F color.

Now give them a second look and try to find out which two of them are of D color and which are F color.

I am sure you are having a hard time to find the differences.

If you have noticed the differences then not only you have a good eyesight but also have excellent understanding of colors. If not then the answers are:

Image 1- F color, Image 2- D color,

Image 3 – D color and Image 4 – F color Diamonds.

Those who have noticed the differences, ask yourself this question- are the differences negligible or prominent. In the answer lies your preferences of choice.

The bottom line is the differences are so microscopic and negligible that only an expert grader under a controlled environment can tell you the parameters of differences. I hope you get my point.

Hence, if you choose F color instead of D for your engagement ring or any other jewelry that means you are getting good value of your money without compromising on quality.

2. Huge price differences between D and F color grade

This is where we all think twice before deciding which color diamond to choose. In my previous point I showed you how microscopic is the quality difference.

Now, I will show you by choosing F color how you will save a good chunk of your hard-earned money and that too keeping its quality intact. Now, let’s check this out with the real price.

3. D & F Color-Quality at its best:

As per GIA’s color grading chart, E & F colors are both stated as near colorless in appearance only next to D color in quality.

D is at the top of the quality chart but if you are given two diamonds one D color and one F color together, I bet you will have hard time in judging which one is D and which one is F.

As I have said earlier the differences are so insignificant that only a skilled grader can find it. It is impossible for others to judge it. Hence, it is a good bet to buy F color diamond instead of D color both in terms of cost and quality.

4. Except for the lab people it is impossible to find the differences after it is mounted on metals like Gold, Platinum or Silver

Let’s see some real images of engagement rings and try to find out which one of them inside is D color and which one is F color diamond.

D vs F color diamond ring- can you find the differences?

See, it’s really impossible to judge. I am saying this after seeing hundreds of similar color jewelry in my fifteen years career in this industry.

Oh! I haven’t given you the answer. Image 1- D color and Image-2 F color.

Let’s have a look at some more diamond rings.

Practically speaking F color diamond is an excellent choice for everybody with or without budget constraints. Hence, I strongly recommend to go for F color diamond and you will have no regret.

5. Bonus Tip & Recommendation:

You have just seen D color and F color diamond. Armed with this information and knowledge, I am sure you will now go for F color diamond with greater confidence.

Be it your engagement ring or any other jewelry F color diamond is a good choice for its excellent quality and unbeatable price.

Now, I am going to show you another color that is sure to incite curiosity in your mind. That is G color diamond which is slightly lesser than F color in quality but very much in line with F color in terms of appearance.

G color diamond belongs to very good quality grade. You should see G color diamond to believe me. Here are a few images of G color diamond and its price. Compare it with F color diamond. If it looks ok to you then it is highly recommended to go for it.

Conclusion:

Diamond’s color plays an important role in its appearance. This is what comes to notice when you first look at it. So, it is equally important to choose the best color within your budget, without sacrificing quality.

In this blog I have written what I felt after years of experience and practical knowledge in this industry. Both F and G colors are really very good in quality. You should choose what suits you and your budget. I hope this will be helpful to you in choosing the right COLOR DIAMOND.
